Dream teams – building the modern Archive workforce
PSQG is part of the National Council on Archives and focuses on access and service delivery issues in the archives sector.
This year, the Public Service Quality Group (PSQG) Annual Quality Forum addressed some of the various issues surrounding staff recruitment and continual professional development to meet the needs of our stakeholders in an evolving profession: What formal training should all our staff receive? Have the training requirements changed? Which skill sets required for particular roles? Are changes in collection policies reflected in the diversity of staff and users? How much do we think our training has prepared us for our roles?
The morning session was introduced by Charlotte Hodgson, Principal Archivist at Glamorgan Record Office and Convenor of PSQG, and the afternoon session by Geoff Pick, Head of Learning and Access at London Metropolitan Archives.
The keynote speech was given by Jeff James, Director of Public Services at the National Archives. Workforce development and future skill sets
This was followed by presentations on:
Life Long Learning UK and the archive sector by Bruce Jackson, County Archivist, Lancashire Record Office;
Has HLF changed archivists’ perceptions of their roles? by Andrew Flinn, Programme Director, SLAIS, University College London and Louise Ray, Archive Lottery Adviser, National Council on Archives.
Diversifying your workforce by diversifying your collections by Maureen Roberts, Interpretation Officer, London Metropolitan Archives
The new course at Dundee University – how different is it? by Patricia Whatley, Programme Director and Caroline Brown, Programme Leader CAIS
Skills for a 21st Century Conservation Studio by Susan Bradshaw, PACR Accreditation Manager
The presentations were followed by updates on current activities and other Public Services Quality Group business.
These included:
Access to Archives Standard by David Mander
Security and Access Group by Tim Harris and Judith Barnes
The afternoon was rounded off with the Public Services Quality Group business meeting.
