There Be Monsters

Organisation: The National Archives

Grant Award: Your Heritage (£14,000)

The project involved around 15 people from a group called Workshop & Company, whose members have experience of a range of mental health issues. The project used the map collection to stimulate creative responses to the representations of mythical figures contained in old maps and atlases. Following introductory sessions on the role of archives and conservation, the participants created a series of designs and foam models of their own interpretation of what they saw on the maps. One design was selected to be worked up into a full-scale version, using additional ceramic creatures that reflected each members' own inspiration.

Outcomes

The final piece of art was installed within the grounds of The National Archives.
