EERAC: East of England Regional Archive Council
EERAC is the East of England Regional Archive Council. It represents all who are concerned about the archives of the region, including archivists and conservators and the people who use archives. The current Chairman is Susan Flood.
The membership of EERAC was reviewed in December 2005 and is based on the membership of the NCA, plus various co-opted or observing local or regional archival bodies or experts. EERAC meets four times a year, at venues alternating between repositories in Cambridge and other repositories around the region. The next meeting is on the 5th December.
EERAC is supported by the Regional Development Officer - Archives and other officers of MLA East of England (see www.mlaeastofengland.org.uk ). EERAC has published a leaflet about the archives of the region, which is available from MLA East of England.
Eastern Promise
Eastern Promise is EERAC's archive strategy for the East of England, and is available by clicking here. Since being approved in 2003 Eastern Promise has been adopted by EEMLAC as the basis for its archive action plan and EEMLAC is currently carrying out work which addresses all the strategic aims of Eastern Promise, although in most cases EEMLAC is using a cross-domain approach (i.e. where possible addressing the archive priorities in the context of museums and libraries).
Current priorities
EERAC has sponsored an investigation of the viability of setting up a regional digital repository, based on the expertise available at the UK Data Archive in Colchester. This project is at the report-writing stage and is soon to be published.
EERAC is offering pump-priming grants to help the establishment and development of community archives across the region, and has recently organized a conference on this subject at the Norfolk Record Office.
EERAC has jointly sponsored, with MLA East of England, an investigation into the costs and issues which would be encountered by a regional digital repository in the East of England. The study, which is available in hard copy from MLA East of England, or by download from
http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/news/newsdetail.asp?ID=1590, was a joint project involving the county archive services of Bedfordshire and of Hertfordshire, and the UK Data Archive at the University of Essex.
